about the gym
Gymnasium Manager: Rory Hassall
The Saint Giles Remedial Gymnasium was for many years managed
by the charismatic and popular Sport Slade who sadly passed
away in February 1998.
During 1998, the Gymnasium was completely overhauled and
refurbished. It was reopened in July 1998 and named in honor
of Sport Slade.
The new Gymnasium proved so successful that a decision was
taken to increase the area by about 60%. A donation of gymnasium
equipment from Standard Bank at this time was particularly
fortuitous. This project was completed towards the end of
1999.

Now With the aid of a qualified and friendly staff, the Gymnasium
offers Remedial Exercise Therapy for handicapped persons in the form
of Active and Passive Resistance Exercise. Also offered at the gym
is APS and TENS therapy as well as regular Blood Pressure Monitoring.
The Gymnasium has developed over the years to benefit those
nearing the end of their initial rehabilitation phase i.e. a person
who has suffered a disability (such as a stroke) will undergo their
initial intensive care in hospital, then seek the assistance of
specialists such as physiotherapists or chiropractors or in some
cases, speech therapists and even psychologists, depending on the
severity or nature of the acquired disability.
After the completion of this phase patients seek our assistance
for post functional rehabilitation.
In cases where patients are not able to afford the treatment
offered by the above mentioned specialists, Saint Giles is able to
offer an alternative form of rehabilitation therapy.
The use of the Sport Slade Memorial Gymnasium is free of charge,
subject to referral by a registered medical practitioner and
approval by means of a preliminary screening by the gymnasium
manager.
Donations towards Gymnasium operating costs are always welcome
as the gym is run on the generosity of a supportive public.
