Outwork
In the late seventies, the association between Saint Giles
and the Natal Blood Transfusion Services began. Two NBTS workers
decided to assist with finding therapeutical work for Saint
Giles members and before long, Saint Giles provided a packing
team for blood products produced by the Natal Fractionation
Centre.
For years the "A" team packed products at their
own facilities in Prince street, but it later became essential
for them to adhere to strict regulations pertaining to the
packaging of pharmaceutical products. With the shortage of
space at Prince street became a problem, the packaging of
blood was moved to the NBTS headquarters at Paradise Valley
in Pinetown. The team took this change in their stride and
have, since the beginning of 1989, been commuting daily to
Pinetown, to work in the NBTS packaging unit.
Saint Giles now provides disable workers to several industries
in the greater Durban Area.
